The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has demanded the immediate reinstatement of the interdicted headmistress of West African SHS.

The headmistress of WASS, Dr. Mrs. Shine Agatha Ofori, was interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for the unauthorized collection of money from students.

In a statement by the GES, she is to hand over the administration of the school to the Regional Director of Education pending the final determination of the case by the Regional Disciplinary Committee.

However, according to the president of NAGRAT, Mr. Angel Carbonu, GES has no right to interdict the headmistress because unauthorized collection of money from students is a prevalent practice in public schools due to limited funds and resources.

Speaking in a press conference monitored by 1Family Radio, Mr. Carbonu called on the government to channel its energy into solving the issue of insufficient resources rather than singling out Mrs. Ofori as a scapegoat.

“The issue goes beyond West Africa Senior High School; it is a nationwide problem. Singling out head teachers in this manner is absolutely wrong and unacceptable,’’ he said.

He urged the government to evaluate the free SHS policy and to take practical measures that would improve education.
