The High Court’s decision to hear the case against James Gyakye Quayson every day has drawn criticism from former President John Dramani Mahama.

The court decided on Friday, June 16, 2023, that the trial of the expelled lawmaker for Assin North will begin on June 20, 2023, with daily hearings. Gyakye was accused of five offenses, including perjury, filing a false statutory declaration, deceit against a public official, and forging a passport.

In response, Mahama said he is struggling to comprehend why Gyakye is being treated this way because criminals aren’t even prosecuted in this way.

Addressing some party supporters in the constituency during a community durbar on June 18, 2023, which was monitored by 1Family Radio, the flagbearer of the NDC alleged that the treatment being meted out to the ousted lawmaker was motivated by animosity for him.

He said, “They have also taken him to court, and they are alleging that they are going to jail him because of the animosity for Gyakye.’’

The court now instructs him to appear in court daily. This treatment is not given to any perpetrators, not even those who have killed someone. There is no requirement for murderers to appear in court every day so that their case can be heard.

“The case involving NAM 1 has been in court for nearly three years. This case is not even heard on a daily basis. What has Gyakye done to you? Has he murdered anyone? Has he stolen someone’s money? He quizzed.

“They ought to bring a mat for him to sleep on to the court. Even if he is not here on the day of the by-election, he will still win,” he said.
