The head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Chris Hughton, has reacted to the team’s stalemate against Madagascar on Sunday, June 18, 2023.

To guarantee eligibility in the upcoming AFCON, which will be contested in Ivory Coast, Ghana needed to win their last game of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification in Group E. However, they only managed two shots on goal, resulting in a goalless draw.

Despite the result, the Black Stars are still in first place in the group with nine points, and they must now work to avoid losing against the Central African Republic in their next match.

However, Chris Hughton has stated that he is really dissatisfied with the game’s outcome because he was hoping for a win rather than a draw. He also blamed the team’s inability to score on the pitch’s poor condition.

“We are very disappointed. We came here with an attitude and a mindset to win,’’ he told a group of journalists monitored by 1Family Radio.

“You need to score goals, and today we had trouble doing that. The field is challenging and extremely uneven; nevertheless, it is the same for both teams.

The 64-year-old coach said, “The most depressing thing is that we didn’t score.’’

“Our strategy for the next match is to win. We are playing at home. We know we have to get a result.’’

“Obviously, it’s a game, and we know the consequences if we don’t win,’’ he added.
