Dr. Richard Winfred Anane, former Minister of Health and a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has highlighted the need for the delegates to be cautious in electing a new flagbearer of the party.

He contends that the competency of the candidate, not how long he has been a member of the party, should be the only criteria used to choose the NPP’s next flagbearer.

Speaking in an interview monitored by 1Family Radio, the former minister noted that the ‘Aduru me so’ mantra by Alan Kyerematen implying ‘it is now my turn,” should be justified by loyalty, hard work, and commitment.

“I don’t understand why people are claiming that it is their turn to lead the NPP party,’’ he indicated.

“It is all about competence and your good works. The delegates should trust that you are fit to do a good job, not say so.’’

If that’s the case, he added, then Dr. Bawumia can also lay claim to the position of NPP flagbearer, as his father was also a founding member of the Northern Peoples’ Party, one of the political parties that later came together to create the United Party (UP), the party from which the NPP traces its roots.

“In fact, Dr. Bawumia’s father was one of the Northern People’s Party’s founders; therefore, he is equally qualified to claim that it is his turn,” he added.
