The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reclaimed an amount of Gh¢18. 5 million out of GH¢ 46. 9 million from three public institutions.

These three state institutions include the Parliament of Ghana, the Ghana Broadcasting Company (GBC) and the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL).

Parliament was able to pay an amount of GH¢ 8.5 million out of a total of GH¢ 13 million they owed the ECG to avoid disconnection of power. Laila Abubakari, the External Communications Manager of the ECG disclosed that GH¢5 million of the GH¢8.5 million will be paid by the Ministry of Finance via the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS).

Speaking to the media monitored by 1Family Radio, Laila Abubakari furthered they had to reject an offer by Parliament to pay the rest of the amount via cheque because they are only accepting payment made electronically during this revenue mobilization exercise.

The team later moved to the GACL where they were able to recover GH¢ 10 million out of the GH¢ 28 million indebtedness. They reached a consensus with the ECG to settle the rest in a two weeks-time.

The taskforce concluded their exercise on March 20, 2023 at the GBC which owes the power distributing company an amount of GH¢ 5.9 million. GBC disclosed that the Ministry of Information had reached  a consensus with the Ministry of Energy to settle their debt later this year.
