Weija dam likely to be opened by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL)

Weija dam to be opened to allow the spillage of excess water

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced to the general public especially residents around Weija and its environs about its intention to open the Weija dam to allow the spillage of excess water from the dam.

According to a statement by the management of the GWCL, the safe operating level of the dam is 47ft but as at 28th of April, 2023, the current of the dam is at 46ft.

The statement noted that the management will not delay in opening the gates of the dam to spill the excess water if the current rises above 46. 5ft.

It was noted that this exercise is necessary to protect the solidarity of the dam and also to avoid the occurrence of any calamity.

Management of the GWCL in the statement sighted by 1Family Radio cautioned the residents downstream to evict from the area before the commencement of this exercise.

The press release urged the Municipal Assembly to desilt the firth to allow for the water flow into the sea without any interruption.

Areas likely to be affected by this exercise include Tetegu, Oblogo, lower McCarthy Hill, Lowe Weija, Pambros Salt, Bojo Beach, Adakope and its environs.

The management stated, “the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) the National Security, Chiefs, opinion leaders and all stakeholders who have possessions downstream have been notified of the development and the current state of the dam.’’

The general public has been called upon to be cooperative in this exercise to prevent a repetition of what happened in the past.
