Premier league clubs have announced their intention to remove gambling sponsorship from the front of club’s matchday shirts.
This ban which will commence from the beginning of the 2026/27 season seeks to reduce the advertising of gambling while promoting responsible gambling.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, April 13, 2023, the Premier leagues clubs stated that they have collectively decided to ban betting companies from being the main sponsors of the matchday shirts of the clubs.
It was stated that the announcement comes off after an extensive consultation which involved the league, its clubs and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. This decision was taken as part of the Government’s current review of the gambling legislation.
The statement which was sighted by 1Family Radio indicated, “Premier Leagues clubs have collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of club’s matchday shirts, becoming the first sports league in the UK voluntarily take such measure to reduce the advertising of gambling.’’
However, the statement noted that sponsorships will be allowed to run until the end of the 2025/26 season.
