The former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has shared his two cents about the announcement by the Education Minister to close down nonperforming schools in the country.

The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum last week cautioned the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and the heads of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to improve their educational performances or stand the risk of being closed down.

However, the former president believes that closing down nonperforming schools is not the right way to go. He cautioned the minister to quit if he doesn’t have the solutions to the educational challenges of the country.

Addressing the branch executives of the NDC on Sunday which was monitored by 1Faminly Radio, John Mahama noted, ‘’the Minister of Education wants to close down nonperforming schools. If these schools are not performing, he needs to ask himself why they are not doing so. Perhaps, they do not have enough teachers or even books and other learning materials.’’

He cautioned, “the Education Minister should resign for someone to administer if he can’t provide these schools with the needed materials to aid them in teaching and learning.’’

The former president noted that during his tenure of office, nonperforming schools were provided with learning materials to improve on their performances.

“Assist them to improve on their performances but don’t you dare close down these schools,” John warned.
