Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has hinted that the minority caucus in parliament will not approve the new Constitutional Instrument (CI) by the Electoral Commission.

The new CI proposal by the Electoral commission seeks to make the Ghana Card the only identification document for registering voters in the 2024 general elections.

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta has assured Ghanaians that the government has reached an agreement with CalBank for GH¢ 100 million to ensure that the three million Ghana Cards which are stuck in warehouses are released.

Reacting to this, Okudzeto in a post he shared on his Facebook page indicated that the minority will not approve of this proposal because they don’t understand how the government was able to raise funds for the Ghana Cards to be released while Ghanaians are suffering.

The post sighted by 1Family Radio reads “A government unable to pay bondholders, unable to provide furniture for 2.3 million pupils, unable to address SHS congestion, unable to clear NABCO arrears and unable to fulfil promises to COVID frontliners is suddenly giving Ghana Cards assurances worth a staggering GH¢ 1.4billion.”

According to him, politicians must understand that meeting the needs and expectations of Ghanaians are the only way to win power and not manipulating elections.

Okudzeto concluded by saying that “the NDC caucus in parliament means every word when say: there shall be no new CI.”
