Ato Forson, the current leader of the minority caucus in parliament on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress has hinted that the Akuffo-Addo government has made life unbearable for Ghanaians.

Speaking to the press in parliament on February 20, 2023, he expressed his disapproval of the new ministerial nominees adding that the Akuffo-Addo administration has mishandled the country’s economy for the past six years.

He mentioned that currently, the country is burdened with unmanageable debt. The lawmaker disclosed that our debt is close to GH¢ 600 billion which is about 103% of our GDP, “this is the highest level of indebtedness in the 4th Republic,” he explained.

Ato lamented that the inflation rate keeps on shooting up and also the price of goods has increased beyond the reach of the ordinary Ghanaian. He stated that the school feeding program in Senior High Schools across Ghana is very discouraging.

The lawmaker indicated that the ruling government has retained the principal payments to some bondholders under the DDEP and this has compelled pensioners who depend on their bond proceeds to protest against the Debt Restructuring Program. He continued that the just this year, the country’s interest rate has fallen about 20%.

The minority leader projected that about seventeen banks and over eighty percent of insurance companies may collapse because of the DDEP.

“It is very obvious that this current suffering is because the President, the Vice President and the Finance Minister mismanaged the economy,” he stressed. He furthered that the president doesn’t seem to care about the plight of Ghanaians by ignoring their pleas to reduce the size of his government.

“Ghanaians have called for a reduction in the size of government, which is a major drainer of public funds,” he noted.
