The Supreme Court of Ghana has mandated that the name of James Gyakye Quayson, the MP for Assin North, be deleted from the records of the Parliament of Ghana.

This decision follows an application filed this year by Michael Ankomah Nifmah asking for the accurate and correct interpretation of Article 94 (2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution.

This article states that a person who has allegiance to a nation other than Ghana is ineligible to serve as a member of Parliament.

Gyakye wasn’t eligible to run for office as of the time he submitted his nomination form for the 2020 parliamentary elections in October since he hadn’t relinquished his Canadian citizenship.

A snippet of the court ruling monitored by 1Family Radio indicated that the Electoral Commission (EC) violated the constitution by permitting Mr. Quayson to run in the 2020 parliamentary elections without providing evidence that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship.

On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the court, which was presided over by Judge Justice Jones Doste, ruled unanimously that Mr. James Gyakye Quayson’s name should be expunged from the records of parliament.
