The Ministry of Health has explained what the sector minister actually meant when he said that the National Health Insurance Card (NHIS) is no longer working.
The Health Minister, Kweku Agyeman-Manu who also doubles as the MP for the Dormaa Central Constituenc stated that the health insurance card is no longer working. He also raised some concerns about how patients who are subscribed to the scheme are treated at some health facilities across the country.
“From the end-users’ point of view, the health insurance card is not working as a result of extortions. I am a patient and I know what I am saying,’’ he noted while addressing some senior managers of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) at a meeting on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at the Ashanti Region.
According to the Health Ministry, the news reports on what the minister said are misleading and a complete misrepresentation of what the Minister actually said.
In a statement issued by the Health Ministry sighted by 1Family Radio indicated that the statement by Agyeman-Manu was an admonition to the managers of the GHS to desist from the habit of extorting money from patients.
“We wish to state clearly that the said headlines are misleading and a complete misrepresentation of what the Minister said on the respective subject matter. According to the Minister, “from the end-users’ point of view, it looks like the Health Insurance is not working as a result of extortions.’’
“This statement is not meant to insinuate that Health Insurance is not working but is an admonition to the managers of the Ghana Health Service through its providers to end the criminality by every means possible,’’ the ministry stated.
They continued that the minister pays for his service in cash anytime he visits the hospital because he can afford it just to lessen the claims burden on the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
