The leader of a galamsey gang declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service, Kwame Ato Asare Ani has disclosed that he is an informant for the police service in the Axim area.
On Sunday, 2nd April, 2023, a viral video circulated online in which a purported leader of a galamsey gang was captured confronting a police officer for demanding extra money from him after he has given him all the money he collected from an undisclosed site.
Explaining what led to the standoff with the police officers in the viral video, Kwame stated that he is not a thief as he has been accused by the police but he rather works as an intermediary between the police and the illegal miners in the community.
Speaking from a hideout in an exclusive interview with Kevin Taylor on his Loud Silence TV monitored by 1Family Radio, Kwame revealed that for some time now, he has been giving the police monies he collects from the illegal miners in Axim.
He furthered that he doesn’t only receive money from these illegal miners on behalf of the police but he and his gang sometimes fight alleged criminals with the support and the consent of the police officers.
Ani explained that he collected an amount of GH¢100,000.00 from the illegal miners but he refused to give it to the police because he thought they were taking him for a ride while adding that some residents in his community are aware that he works with the police.
“The main reason the police are chasing me is because I failed to give an amount of GH¢100,000.00 I collected from a site at Kwakukrom,’’ he disclosed.
Explaining why he didn’t give them the money, he noted, “I refused to give them the money because I felt used after being an informant for them all this while.’’
“The police have accused me of robbery after I refused to give them the one billion cedis. I am not a thief because there is no evidence to prove that I am a thief,’’ he said.
He added that the Axim Police Commander in the person of Mr. Sarfo has instructed him to hand over the money in his possession before they will let go of his vehicle and other machines they have captured.
Kwame unveiled that these police officers can come to his house not less than five times daily to collect money from him and they don’t leave until he has made payments to them.
