Parliament has charged the Education Committee of the house to investigate Ghana’s premier university over an injunction by the Accra High Court.

Some continuing students of the of the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana were stranded at the beginning of the academic due to a new residential policy by the school. Students of the Commonwealth and the Mensah Sarbah halls were reassigned to other halls because of recorded clashes between these halls.

The Accra High court in January, 2023 placed an injunction on the implementation of the new residential policy of the school. The school however did not adhere to this injunction by the court.

On the 29th of March, 2023, Joseph Osei-Owusu, the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament charged the Education Committee to investigate the neglect of the injunction order by the court.

His statement comes after the Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committte, Dr. Clement Apaak criticized the residential policy of the school and demanded that the adherence of the order by the school.

Mr. Joseph Osei-Owusu directed the Education Committee to get the management of the school on board to unearth their reasons for disregarding the injunction order.

Hon. Joseph Osei-Owusu stated, “the orders given by the court are in the interim to hold balance while the matter is being heard.’’

“I hope that the resolution will be done outside the court that Is where we are certain to reach a consensus. I refer this issue to the Education Committee to get the school on board and give us a feedback as to why the management has implemented the order by the court,’’ he noted.
