A leading member and the former deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen has shared his two cents about the appointment of new Electoral Commissioners by the president.
He elucidated that there is nothing wrong with the president appointing party members as Electoral Commissioners because the 1992 Constitution does not oppose this act.
“The constitution charges the president to fill vacant positions in his administration with proficient people regardless of their political affiliations,’’ he noted in an interview on Neat FM monitored by 1Family Radio.
“The president acted based on the directive of the constitution. Even if the allegations by the NDC that the new commissioners are members of the NPP, they should go through the constitution and see if there is any disqualification based on political affiliations,’’ Obiri charged.
He added that the constitution mandates the president to appoint the members of the EC notwithstanding their party cards.
“What is wrong with the appointees being NPP faithful? The president is mandated by the constitution to appoint people into positions, it didn’t categorically disqualify people affiliated to the ruling party,’’ he explained.
Mr. Boahen urged the public to treat with contempt the allegations by the NDC because their main aim is to tarnish the image of the NPP to Ghanaians.
