The minority caucus in Parliament has disclosed that there will be no discussions on the Constitutional Instrument (CI) proposal by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission until she appears before parliament.

The proposed CI by Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC)) seeks to make the Ghana Card the only identification card for the 2024 general elections.

On February 23, 2023 the proposal was brought before parliament for debate. Jean Mensa was represented by Dr. Bossman Asare, the deputy commissioner and some officials from the National Identification Authority (NIA).

However, the minority caucus demanded the presence of the EC chairperson before any discussion will commence. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority leader indicated that although the deputy commissioner was in the house, Jean must also be present to explain what the new CI entails.

He argued that the EC chairperson must appear before the house to guarantee that the CI will not deprive Ghanaians of their franchise to vote during the 2024 elections. Dr. Forson indicated that they will not debate on the new CI proposal until Jean Mensa appears before the house.

To this effect, the speaker of parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin declared that Jean must appear before parliament before any debate will begin. This was monitored by 1Family Radio.
