Over 600 unaccredited programs are being run by some universities across the nation, according to the 2021 Auditor General’s report.

The University of Ghana (UG), Legon, the premier university in Ghana, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) were among the universities found guilty of this offense.

Out of 360 programs offered by KNUST, only 61 are accredited, while over 374 programs offered by the University of Ghana are not accredited, according to the report seen by 1Family Radio.

Out of the 374 academic programs, only 14 are diploma programs, 80 are undergraduate programs, 213 are post-graduate uncertified courses, and 67 are PhD programs.

However, this has led to some questions about the legitimacy and value of the certificates these universities provide to students who complete these programs.

The Ghana Tertiary Commission (GTEC), however, has been criticized for these errors by the management of the two universities.

Programs at KNUST with expired accreditation include those in political science, sociology, computer science, mathematics, MPhil political science, MSc mathematics, PhD English, and PhD sociology.

In contrast, approved degrees include those in law, geomatic engineering, chemical engineering, audiology, materials engineering, and ceramics technology.

The University of Ghana offers some programs that are not accredited, such as the B.A. in Sociology, the Diploma in Environmental Health, the M.A. in Communication Studies, the M.A. in HIV and AIDS Management, and the Ph.D. in Accounting.

While B.A. Chinese, Ph.D. Statistics, Ph.D. French, MPH, and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) are accredited.
