Following Kawya’s comment on some of his previous signees, Samini Ba, real name John Awuah, one of Ghana’s entertainment pundits, stated that most Ghanaian artists are irrelevant.
The head of Highly Spiritual recently bemoaned his difficulties. In an interview that was picked up by 1Family Radio, Kaywa said that “the biggest challenge in label management is poaching.”
Samini Ba responded by saying that 40% of artists can only succeed in Ghana. He claims that this is dependent on the sponsors of the artists and the endorsement agreements they have.
During his guest appearance on Lystup entertainment program on 1Family Radio, Samini Ba claimed that it is nearly impossible for an artist to maintain relevance after leaving a record label.
Samini Ba explained by citing some artists who, after leaving their record labels, lost their relevance in the music industry when DJ Chocolate asked if it’s a good idea for an artist to leave a record label that isn’t helpful in order to poach another record label that he thinks can help promote his brand.
“Let’s use Lynx Entertainment as an example and name five artists who are still in demand today despite leaving this record label. After leaving the label, Mzvee is no longer relevant as of right now.
She released an album with international artists like Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage about a year ago, but the album failed to find a market, he claimed.
Samini Ba explained that, other than Eugene’s “Cryptocurrency” and “Single,” the rest of his songs didn’t really sell, which is why Kuami Eugene is no longer relevant.
He claimed, “Kuami Eugene doesn’t have hits; all his prior songs are only Kontomire, Sebe, and Wele.” His Cryptocurrency and single were the only hits.
He continued by saying that after leaving the Ground Up Chale record label, artists like Quamina MP, Kofi Mole, and Kwesi Arthur, among others, suffered failure. Because they rely so much on record labels, the entertainment expert claimed that the majority of these artists are unable to succeed on their own in the market.
Before quitting a record company, Samini Ba suggested, “Ask yourself if you have saved enough to help yourself out there.”
