Bola Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, has been elected as the new chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Tinubu, who took over from Guinea-Bissau’s president, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, is expected to chair the organization for the ensuing twelve months.
On Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Leadership, he was appointed to serve as the organization’s chairman.
Following his election as chairman, Bola Tinubu declared that, despite its challenges, democracy is the best form of government and that he would take it seriously.
“We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very tough, but it is the best form of government,’’ he said during his submission, which was monitored by 1Family Radio.
He gave the group his word that his leadership would protect the foundations of democracy and would forbid a coup in any West African nation.
“We need it to be an example to the rest of Africa and the world. We will not allow coup after coup in West Africa,’’ he noted.
