Amnesty International has advised the Parliament of Ghana not pass the LGBTQ bill because it breaches human rights.

The organization contends that since parliament needs to focus on other critical problems facing the nation, time shouldn’t be wasted on debates about the LGBTQ bill.

Speaking in an interview on Starr Today, monitored by 1Family Radio, the director for Amnesty International in the country, Genevieve Partington, stated that the bill that was debated yesterday should be thrown out in its entirety.

“It is important to understand others’ perspectives and to allow those who support LGBTQ rights an opportunity to explain why this bill should not be passed’’.

So even though some people choose to talk about things below the belt, she said, “I think it is a healthy discussion overall.”

“However, with regard to Amnesty, we firmly feel that this bill ought to be repealed in its entirety rather than passed. Since it blatantly infringes human rights, parliament should not even consider it.’’

‘’I think lawmakers ought to focus more of their attention on important national issues,’’ she noted.

There are places without electricity and water, Genevieve said, “and those are the things we should focus on, not the bill,’’ she added.
