The Minority Caucus in Parliament has demanded the arrest of Gabby Otchere Darko, Lord Commey, and other individuals named in the illegal mining report by former Minister of Environment, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) invited Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who was subsequently detained, leading to this appeal from the minority.
The minority contends that if the government is serious about combating illicit mining, often known as galamsey, it should demand the arrest of Gabby Otchere-Darko, Lord Oblitey Commey, and Albert Quarm.
The call for the arrest of these individuals was noted in a statement read by the ranking member on the Lands and Forestry Committee, Rashid Pelpuo.
“If the government wants to demonstrate seriousness in the fight against this galamsey, it must go beyond the arrest of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng,’’ Rashid noted.
“It should go wider by ensuring they arrest government and Jubilee appointees at the heart of government, which includes Mr. Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, the president’s cousin, the Director of Operations at the Presidency, Lord Oblitey Commey, and Albert Quarm, who have all been cited by the committee.’’
“It is our opinion that the public inquiry on the committee’s report and damage to our forest reserves is necessary, especially with the now-wider destruction of our lands and rivers by galamsey operators,’’ he read.
“Our cocoa farms are diminished, our people are drinking mercury-polluted water, our rivers are dying, and our forest reserves are destroyed on a daily basis,’’ he said.
