Former Member of Parliament for Assin North on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gyakye Quayson, has announced his intention to contest once again in the upcoming by-election in the constituency.

On May 17, 2023, the Supreme Court ordered parliament to expunge Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records. This was after it was proven in court that the MP had a dual citizenship at the time he filed his nominations to contest the 2020 elections.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensah in a release on May 31, 2023, declared June 27, 2023, as the date for the Assin North by-election. The decision by the EC follows a statement by Parliament in which the parliamentary seat for Assin North was declared vacant.

In the latest development to the story, the former MP has declared publicly that he intends on contesting and retaining the Assin North seat for the NDC.

He also debunked the allegation that he owes allegiance to Canada in a press release on June 1, 2023, sighted by 1Family Radio.

“When I declared on my nomination forms on October 2020 that I owed no allegiance to any country other than Ghana, that was, indeed, the truth,’’ he wrote.

“To date, no one has provided any evidence that I owed allegiance to Canada at the time I filed my nominations and when I was elected and sworn in as your Member of Parliament.’’

“Having made that point, let me make it clear to everyone that the most important thing to me right now is to contest and win the by-election which is the result of what the Supreme Court announced on May 17, 2023,’’ he said.

Gyakye Quayson assured the electorates of his commitment to serve the constituents should he win the by-elections.

“I am determined to continue serving the good people of Assin North with all my heart, soul, body and all the resources I can muster for the benefit of my constituents. Democracy must be restored.’’

“I urge you all to come out in your numbers to vote for me so I return to Parliament and continue the work I began to do on your behalf, towards advancing the Assin North development agenda,’’ he stated.

He proceeded by expressing his gratitude to the constituents for their massive support and show of love after the verdict of the court.

“I have been deeply touched by the amazing support and encouragement from you in the constituency after the Supreme Court decision on May 17, 2023.’’

“I was particularly moved by your show of love and support through the vigil organized by the youth at Assin Bereku on Sunday, May 28, 2023.’’

“The massive attendance showed the depth of support and encouragement I am receiving. I was really touched,’’ he added.
