About 9 million unregistered SIM cards have been blocked due to the failure of users to participate in the SIM registration exercise.
In October 2021, the Government of Ghana launched the telecom subscriber identification campaign. The SIM registration exercise is meant to reduce the rising incidents of fraud in the country. It will also help track individuals who use their phones for criminal activities.
Years after the exercise was launched, some Ghanaians have still not registered their SIM cards as directed by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization.
The SIM cards of these subscribers have been deactivated after a directive by the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ministry of Communications.
Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, monitored by 1Family Radio, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, disclosed that about 9 million SIM cards have been blocked.
“Those who have not fully registered their SIM cards will be blocked, and as we speak, the number of those who will be blocked is about 9 million,’’ he said.
He continued that about 7.4 million of these subscribers whose SIM cards have been blocked will not have access to their mobile money accounts.
“For the 7.4 million subscribers who have over GH200 million on their wallets, when they are barred, they will get the opportunity if they register to get their numbers back to have access to their monies and historical records back,’’ he added.
