A day before the elections, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flag, withdrew from the party’s presidential and parliamentary contests.
He made this declaration on Friday, May 12, 2023, at a news conference that 1Family Radio covered at the Institute of Fiscal Studies in Accra.
Dr. Duffuor focused on three factors in his decision to withdraw from the competition. He claimed that despite the chairman of the NDC’s guarantee, the inconsistencies he discovered in the voter’s registration have not been corrected.
According to the former governor of the Bank of Ghana, the national chairman of the NDC was given the task of assembling a technical team made up of three technical representatives from each presidential candidate in order to address inconsistencies in the party’s voter register during an earlier meeting with party stakeholders.
Dr. Duffuor, however, thinks that given the time left before the election, this issue cannot be resolved.
“However, despite the assurance given to myself and the team by the party chairman, the party executives went ahead and called a press conference to announce that the elections would take place tomorrow, in an act of complete and unacceptable breach of faith, without having addressed the concerns surrounding the voters register as decided at the meeting of the Council of Elders,” he said.
The second aspect he discussed was the distribution of ballots to the various constituencies without the candidates’ knowledge or cooperation.

“I want to once again express my devotion to the party and its grassroots. My worries, however, that the party is not prepared to hold a free and fair election are plain to observe. Participating in such would be comparable to purposefully sipping from a calabash that was poisoned, he added.
