Daughters of Glorious Jesus, a veteran Ghanaian gospel group has stated that Christians can listen to secular music provided that the lyrics of the song is inspiring.
According to them. So far as the lyrics of the song motivates you to do the right thing, you are allowed to listen to it regardless of the genre.
Their comments are in reaction to an earlier statement made by gospel musician Rev. Moses Ok that Christians shouldn’t listen to secular music because it is not inspired by God.
Speaking in an interview on Onua TV sometime ago, Rev. Moses noted, “you can’t listen to any song as a Christian, I mean spirit-filled Christian. You can’t listen to songs that do not correspond with the scriptures.’’
He furthered that every song is backed by a spirit which compels its listeners to act in accordance with the lyrics of the song.
However, the group made up of three female vocalists has stated that Christians can listen to songs by secular artistes because they are all gifts from God. They made these assertions on UTV’s United Showbiz with MzGee monitored by 1Family Radio.
“As a Christian, you can listen secular songs because sometimes, the lyrics in these songs inspire you to do the right thing. This is also a gift from God, Edna one of the trio noted.
She furthered that listening to secular music doesn’t make you less a Christian. “I like Amakye Dede and his songs very much. This doesn’t mean I am no longer a Christian. The outward appearance of people doesn’t determine whether they are believers or not.’’
“The fact that I am playing Amakye Dede’s song in my car doesn’t mean I am a non-believer,’’ she stated.
Monica Owusu also added that some of these secular artistes are Christians and therefore, there is nothing wrong in listening to their songs.
She said, “some songs by Kojo Antwi give good advice. Just imaging listening to a love song by Kojo Antwi with your partner, isn’t a good feeling.’’
