The Parliament of Ghana has rejected the proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI) by the Electoral Commission (EC) until further favorable consideration have been made.

This proposed Constitutional Instrument seeks to make the Ghana Card the only identification document for the registration of voters implying that it will completely eliminate the guarantor system for registration.

However, on Friday, March 31, 2023, Parliament charged the Electoral Commission to halt any plans of making the Ghana Card the only identification instrument until favourable considerations has been made.

News reaching us (1Family Radio) is that the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Bonsu while representing the report of the committee to the house urged that the EC should officially be communicated that it has been recommended by the special budget that the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) must hold a meeting with parliament.

The purpose of this meeting according to him is to advance on the proposed CI and for the EC and the NIA to give assurance to Parliament with regards to some issues surrounding the new CI.

“After discussions and the responses by the EC, the committee has come to the conclusion that parliament should officially communicate to the EC of this decision for favorable consideration before the completion and presentation to the house,” he added.

Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader has indicated that the decision by the house is unanimous and not based on political leanings.
