Daniel Yao Domelevo, the past Auditor-General has advised politicians to place a limit on the resources they use in organizing campaigns.
According to him, anybody that invests huge amount of money into campaign is likely to reclaim back the money when he assumes power through legal or illegal means.
His comments come after former president John Mahama appealed for the public to finance the campaign of political parties.
Speaking in an interview on TV3 monitored by 1Family Radio, Domelevo indicated that some political parties spend money reckless during campaigns and when they come into power, they find ways and means to recoup their money.
“We must learn to put a limit on the resources we spend on party funding. This is because if a person borrowed money to fund their campaign, then he must refund the money back to wherever he borrowed and it from,’’ he noted.
Responding to the statement by the former president, Domelevo disclosed that they must be rules and regulations abiding the use of public resources to fund the campaigns of political parties.
He added that the existing laws pertaining to the use of public resources to fund political parties have been disregarded by so many people.
“The laws that regulates the transparency and accountability for the funding of political parties have not be regarded over the years,’’ he said.
He stated, “we must make sure that we have the right legal framework before we use public resources to fund political parties either than that, we are headed towards destruction.’’
