Charlotte Osei, the former chairperson of the Electoral Commission has asserted that women who have dared to make a difference in our society must be celebrated.

According to her, women need to be brave and have confident in themselves. “I really think women need to be courageous especially women in African,’’ she stated at the 2023 Women of Valour Summit which was monitored by 1Family Radio.

She furthered that here in Africa, we tend to respect courageous women who are dead. “The only courageous women our society respect are the ones who are on the pages of our history books,’’ charlotte hinted.

Citing Ghana as an example, she noted “we love Yaa Asantewaa but we don’t love the current women who are brave and bold.’’

She added that any woman who wants to do anything of significance will face a lot of unconstructive criticisms and personal attacks but she must find the strength to persist despite these attacks.

Charlotte narrated that in 2017, she was awarded the Woman of Courage Award by the government of the United State of America because of her persistence during the 2016 general election despite the number of inappropriate attacks she received.

The former chairperson of the EC indicated that our society is good at celebrating the dead more the living which can sometimes be very disempowering.

“Women must find the courage to go beyond the limit set by our society,’’ she concuded.
