The former Chief justice of Ghana, Sophia Akuffo has asked the Finance Minister to help himself first by accounting for the debts

On February,10,2023, the former Chief Justice joined the pensioners group to picket at the office of the Finance Minister. According to her, the government should put in more serious measures to address the economic problems in the country.

Speaking to a group of journalists, she stated that all the pensioners in Ghana had the right to leave the country to seek greener pastures outside but they stayed here to work for the country. Sophia added that they had their ups and downs but they still worked diligently for the country.

She furthered that some of them grew up in a dispensation where they were advised to save money for tomorrow. However, some of them lost all their savings because of some government policies in past and it took a while before they were able to trust in the country’s economy and investment.

Ms. Sophia added that most of the retirees invested all their savings into the government bonds and the government now wants to coerce them to agree that they will be paid on the terms of the government.

“why are we in this mess”, she quizzed. She mentioned that no government official has explained to the country why we are in this mess. Sophia stated that we the government has taken debts but has not accounted for it yet.

She opined that the government should tell us how he intends on making things better rather than using the phrase “help me, let me help you”.  “help yourself first, do something serious to restore the economy”, she noted.

According to her, most of the pensioners are over seventy years and they must be respected. The former Chief Justice indicated that forcing the pensioners to sign unto the DDEP is wicked, disrespectful and unlawful
