Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, a candidate for the NPP’s flagbearer position, has received advice from Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Member of Parliament for Takoradi on the NPP ticket, to avoid being a conceited and unthankful person.
His remark follows recent critiques of anonymous NPP party members by Ken Agyapong for poor economic management. However, it has been assumed that his attack was directed at Vice President Bawumia, who is also competing to be the party’s flagbearer and also the head of the economic management team of the country.
In his opinion, it would be extremely unfair and unreasonable for Ken Agyapong to hold the vice president responsible for the country’s fiscal troubles because no one Particular individual can be held accountable.
Speaking in an interview on Takoradi-based Radio 360, monitored by 1Family Radio, the politician noted that even the IMF had said the NPP government was not to blame for the nation’s current economic turmoil.
“When COVID broke, we were all in the nation. Are you the one who created COVID? Even the IMF, who is providing us with a bailout, stated that the NPP did not cause the issue since COVID is to blame for our economic difficulties,” he continued.
He proceeded by saying that the take-or-pay energy sector contracts signed by the previous administration is a significant contributor to the nation’s current fiscal woes. In his opinion, Bawumia is not to blame for this because he had no involvement in the contracts.
What does that have to do with me, Ken Ofori-Atta, or Dr. Bawumia dragging us to the IMF, he questioned?
Darko-Mensah asserted that Ken Agyapong has benefited greatly from the contracts that the NPP government has signed but that, in his desire to become president, he has forgotten all the benefits he has received from those contracts.
“Ghana is a member of the IMF, and they helped us out during COVID. The cedi has stabilized since Ghana contacted the IMF…But what interests me is that, as you and I both know, Ken Agyapong is one of the major government contractors.
“When things were bad and he was benefiting, that was correct, but now that he wants to run for president, he has forgotten all about those benefits he received and wants us to overlook all of that.’’
“He should then revoke all of the contracts he received and give them to others, and declare that he will no longer accept any government contracts in light of Ghana’s return to the IMF. If he keeps acting that way, you’re technically acting like a gregarious person who wants to win both ways,” he added.
“Why won’t he, in line with equity, declare that he would not accept any of the contracts he is now accepting during this IMF time if he wants to find someone to blame for Ghana’s IMF application? He continued, “It needs to be straightened out because he is just misleading people.”
