Feminist and researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi has joined the list of Ghanaians suing Alban Bagbin, speaker of parliament, and the attorney general over the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Dr. Amanda said in her legal letter, which was seen by 1Family Radio, that the speaker had flouted and disregarded the 1992 constitution as well as the authority of the court.
“The respondent has continually violated and shown utter disregard for the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and the court process,’’ parts of the document read.
“That the respondent’s clear, intentional, and continuous disregard of the court process necessitates the Respondent being sanctioned for contempt in the public interest and to protect the dignity of the court.’’
She took legal action because the speaker of parliament had already received a legal writ prohibiting Parliament from considering the measure. Nevertheless, Speaker Bagbin directed the house to move forward with the bill’s second reading in violation of this restraining order.
“That by his conduct in directing or causing Parliament to proceed to a Second Reading of the Bill, in full knowledge of the pending suit and related interlocutory injunction application, the Respondent has disregarded and disrespected the authority of this court,’’ it was noted.
“That such disregard interferes with the outcome of the pending litigation, brings the administration of justice into disrepute, and undermines public confidence in the judicial system.”
As a result, she asked the court to impose sanctions on Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin in order to uphold the court’s dignity.
