The Organized labor movement has announced its intention to commence an indefinite strike beginning July 10, 2023.

This exercise was mandated as a result of the union’s demand that Sunon Asogli Power Limited reinstate three expelled union officials.

The three fired employees are all members of the Ghana Mine Workers Union, a group that falls under the trade union federation known as the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

After unsuccessful attempts to reach a mutually agreeable solution, Organized Labor has decided to take this industrial action.

Speaking to some journalists on Monday, June 26, 2023, the Secretary General of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah, noted that Sunon Asogli Power Limited was given a series of ultimatums to reinstate the three dismissed union workers, but they didn’t oblige.

“We came together and brought to your attention Sunon Asogli’s infringement of workers’ rights. Three of our coworkers have been fired as we speak, he said in the press conference, which was monitored by 1Family Radio.

“We convened here on June 1 and set a deadline of June 26 for their reinstatement. Our friends are still at home right now. The Minister of Employment and Labor Relations, other government officials, and stakeholders have been contacted, but they have not responded.’’

“Today, Organized Labor decided that we would not permit this to continue. We cannot remain passive if the government is willing to allow union leaders to be treated in this manner,” he said.

“This morning, leaders of Organized Labor assembled, and we made a very clear decision: on July 10, no worker will report to work in this country if our three brothers have not been reinstated. If our brothers are not reinstated, all Ghanaian employees will stay at home on Monday, July 10—that is how straightforward and clear it is.’’

“On July 10, all employees in this nation’s public and civil services, along with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), would stay at home. Comrades, I believe this decision we have made is obvious and easy,” Dr. Baah emphasized.
