Kwame Adofo, a Ghanaian private legal practitioner, has alleged that the former president’s claim to appoint only sixty ministers is not realistic.
He made this remark in reaction to a recent statement made by former President John Dramani Mahama that he would be running his next government with only sixty ministers.
According to the lawyer, this statement cannot be taken seriously because it is impossible to run an administration with fewer than eighty ministers.
Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Hello FM, monitored by 1Family Radio, Lawyer Adofo noted that Mahama might change his mind on the number of ministers he would appoint after he has done his calculations well.
“Currently, we have about eighty-six ministers. Out of these ministers, 27 are cabinet ministers, sixteen are regional ministers, seventeen are other ministers, and we also have sectoral ministers, summing up to eighty-six.’’
“Let’s take a careful look at the claim by Mahama that he will run an administration with sixty governments.” Out of the sixty, when you subtract the 16 that are constant and the 27 cabinet ministers that are also automatic, you will be left with about 33 ministers, which is too small to run a government,’’ he explained.
He continued that since this claim has not yet been penned down in the manifesto of the former president, maybe he will come up with a more realistic figure after some consideration.
“Let’s just wait for his manifesto. When we see this claim in the manifesto, then we can be serious about discussing it. At this stage, there is no manifesto; he just gave an acceptance speech.’’
“Maybe after doing their calculations, they will come up with realistic numbers because, as it stands now, 60 is not realistic. Let’s just give him the benefit of the doubt,’’ he said.
