The Member of Parliament for Assin Central and also an NPP flagbearer hopeful has taken a swipe at the government’s decision to ban the importation of second-hand cars.

According to him, many Ghanaians are going to lose their jobs because of the decision by the government to ban the importation of used cars.

In a viral video shared by GraphicOnline sighted by 1Family Radio, the lawmaker noted that the government didn’t really think through this policy before its implementation.

“You cannot import a year to five-year-old cars into the country because VW and Nissan are going to manufacture brand new cars in Ghana,’’ he noted.

He added that this policy by the government will heightened the level of unemployment in the country.

The lawmaker stated, “the direct tax we are going to lose through the custom is more than anything in the country. Look at the number of people who will end up unemployed.’’

“How many jobs can these car manufacturing companies create in the country. We didn’t sit down to examine all these things and we just implemented the policy, don’t bring second-hand cars into the country,’’ he indicated.

He recounted how he bought over 200 second-hand cars for the NPP during their campaign in 2016.

“I bought 240 used pick-ups for the NPP party during their 2016 campaigns. After assuming power, you are telling the people of Ghana not import used cars,’’ the politician said.

Kennedy quizzed, “what is the purchasing power of the citizens in the country. How many cars can these companies produce and how many Ghanaians can afford to buy new cars?’’

“The best thing the government should have done is to make these car producers turn Ghana into their production hub for Africa. This is why I always say that Ghana need pragmatic leaders and not book,’’ he concluded.
