Nelly Adade, a peadiatric and also a senior resident of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has revealed that children can die from measles if not handled well.

Measles is one of the childhood killer diseases and it is highly contagious. However, Nelly noted that due to the vaccination and sensitization on measles, the number of cases on measles have massively decreased in the country.

She stated that measles causes harm when it enters into the brain of its victims, especially in children. The peadiatric also noted that measles causes acute diarrhoea and this might trigger dehydration in children. The outcome of this is kidney failure if not medicated on time.

Nelly explained that despite the fact children are at a higher risk of contracting the disease because they have a weak immune system, pregnant women too can get measles. She hinted that if measles is not treated in pregnant women, it may cause premature delivery, the woman might deliver a child with a much smaller head and the woman might face some challenges during labor.

She concluded that vaccination is best way to cure measles. Ms. Adade advised parents to have their children weighed regularly after delivery and to make sure their children are vaccinated against measles.

Ms. Nelly urged everyone to practice good hygiene to stop the spread of measles.
