Richard Takyi Mensah, the first witness for the prosecution, has undergone cross-examination to begin James Gyakye Quayson’s criminal trial.

Tuesday, July 18, 2023, saw the start of the court case after the Accra High Court rejected the application made by Gyakye Quayson’s attorneys.

Presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, the court proceedings began with the prosecution’s first witness testifying.

The language used by the witness when he made his statement to the police came under scrutiny during Quayson’s attorney, Tsatsu Tsikata’s, cross-examination.

The witness claimed to have given his statement to the police in English. However, when the statement was read to the hearing of all those present in the court, it was stated: “Complaint (Mensah) states in Twi Language and is being recorded in English.

Mensah said that during the narration to the police, “it could have been that he inadvertently switched to the local language,” when questioned about his first denial of providing the statement in Twi.

Today, July 19, 2023, the case will continue with further cross-examination.
