In both the 1978 All-Africa Games and the 1978 Commonwealth Games, Azumah—the sole representative of Ghana—won gold medals in the featherweight divisions.
The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) honored him with the Amateur Boxer of the Year title in 1978.
Are you aware that Azumah Nelson won the WBC featherweight and super-featherweight titles three times? I bet you didn’t know this.
From 1984 to 1987, he was the WBC featherweight champion. He also twice held the WBC super featherweight belt between 1988 and 1997.
As if that weren’t enough, Professor was the only boxer to have won the title twice and dominated the division twice when the WBC’s Greatest Super Featherweight Boxer of All-Time was announced in Las Vegas in 2004.
The first Ghanaian to be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame was Azumah Nelson. Oh yes, Azumah Nelson was the sole boxer from Ghana to have his name added to the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.
2020 saw Azumah Nelson become the only Ghanaian to have his name inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.
