The public has been reassured by Samuel Atta Akyea, the chairman of the Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, that the government is making efforts to pay off the debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

His remark follows the IPPs’ announcement that they will close their power plants as of July 10, 2023, due to government indebtedness.

Addressing some journalists on Saturday, July 1, 2023, the lawmaker noted the Finance Minister is taking action to stop the catastrophic consequences of the IPPs’ shutdown of power plants.

“The independent power producers have concerns about the necessity that they should be paid and what will happen if you pay one and don’t pay the other and the power is withdrawn, so I don’t think that the Minister of Finance will do that kind of thing of paying some and not paying others,” Atta stated during the press conference, monitored by 1Family Radio.

‘’The government is making every effort to prevent that from happening because it is well aware of the consequences of taking away power from the system.’’

The Finance Minister must find a mechanism to guarantee that even if they are met in some fair conditions, they should still do it. The idea of the situation is that if you don’t have the money but have the goodwill to pay some of it, it will encourage them to grant you power. However, if you take a stand against paying them at all, you are effectively daring them to shut off the power,’’ he advised.
