Residents of the Assin North constituency will be going to the polls today, June 27, 2023, to elect a new Member of Parliament for the constituency.

The by-elections, which are currently ongoing, began at 7 a.m. and are expected to come to a close at 5 p.m.

This comes on the heels of parliament’s declaration of the Assin North parliamentary seat vacant after the name of the ousted MP, James Gyakye Quayson, was expunged from the records of parliament.

The court gave this order after Gyakye was indicted for having dual citizenship when he filed his nominations to contest the 2020 general elections.

James Gyakye, who was the MP for the constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is anticipated to square off with Charles Opoku, the New Patriotic Party’s representative in this by-election.

Ahead of the elections, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed some security personnel to the constituency in order to ensure law and order during the election.

“We wish to urge the people of Assin North constituency to go about their normal activities freely, including going out to exercise their civic duty of casting their vote,’’ a statement by the Police sighted by 1Family Radio noted.
