Dr. Kpessa Whyte of the University of Ghana, Legon, has been convicted of contempt of court by the highest court in the country.

This follows a tweet by Dr. Kpessa in which he stated that the Supreme Court is gradually becoming a stupid court. He also accused the court of practicing partisanship.

However, in a subsequent post sighted by 1Family Radio, Dr. Kpessa noted that his statement wasn’t in reference to the Supreme Court of Ghana but to developments elsewhere.

Meanwhile, his lawyer has pleaded with the court to have mercy on the lecturer because he has apologized and retracted his tweet from social media.

On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the Supreme Court convicted the lecturer after he pleaded guilty with an explanation.

The bench presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu is currently contemplating the sentence to give him for scandalizing the apex court of the land.

Dr. Kpessa, during the court hearing monitored by 1Family Radio, rendered an apology to the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice for the statement he made.

“Please permit me to state clearly that I have no reason to slander our Supreme Court, and I hereby sincerely apologize openly for any pain and discomfort my tweets may have caused the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court, and the entire judiciary,’’ he said.
