9 School children dead after boat capsized at Faana Bortianor in Accra

The owner of the boat is currently in police custody

Nine school going children have been confirmed dead after a boat conveying them on Wednesday capsized.

This tragic event occurred on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in the afternoon after the children were returning home from school.

There were twelve children in the boat together together with the boat owner when the boat capsized. It has been reported that they were traveling from Fanaa to Kelee in the Ga South Municipality.

News reaching us (1Family Radio) is that the school children are between the ages of eight and fifteen years.

Eight bodies were initially found and sent to the Morgue at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. One child however couldn’t found on Wednesday but after a frantic search by the youth in community, her body was retrieved on Thursday morning.

Thankfully, three of the children managed to swim back ashore safely. The boat owner is currently in the custody of the police to aid in their investigations.

The whole town has been thrown into a mourning state after the incident happened.
