Veteran media personality and fashion designer, Kofi Okyere Darko has taken a swipe at a statement made by Gyedu-Blay Ambolley that the VGMA has destroyed the Ghanaian highlife.
Ambolley earlier in an interview with Graphic Showbiz attributed the decline of the highlife music genre to the Vodafone Music Awards (VGMA) while questioning the criteria used in the selection of nominees.
According to him, we have pursued other music genres like dancehall at the expense of our own Ghanaian highlife and VGMA has fueled this agenda by awarding such musicians.
In reaction to this, KOD has lambasted Ambolley for such statement which he described as nothing but nonsense.
According to KOD no award scheme has been able to do half of what VGMA has done in terms of promoting Ghanaian music internationally.
In a Facebook post sighted by 1Family Radio, KOD questioned Ambolley which award scheme has been able to last more than a decade in this country.
“Since independence, which award scheme has been able to project our music like VGMA? How many of these schemes have projected Ghanaian music beyond Ghana? How many have unfailingly done more than a decade?’’ he quizzed.
“What nonsense! When was the last time Ambolley released an album? He should blame the media houses and not VGMA.’’
KOD stated that VGMA is not responsible for the decline in the highlife music but the radio stations which have refused to play these songs and also the failure of the highlife artistes to evolve with time.
“When was the last time you heard an highlife music on the radio? VGMA caused am?’’ he quizzed again.
“Some of you musicians have refused to evolve yet you are quick to point fingers at others for your misfortune,’’ he said.
