Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for the Efutu Constituency in the Central Region has disclosed that many lawmakers really suffer after they leave office.

According to him, the perception by some Ghanaians that MPs are affluent and powerful is not really not the reality.

He made this assertion at a public lecture by the faculty of the Ghana Institute for the Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) which was monitored by 1Family Radio.

The lawmaker stated that although MPs are not development agents, they dip deep into their pockets to help their constituents.

“Although lawmakers are not particularly developments agents, many MPs, including myself, sometimes dig so deep into our personal pocket to provide private social amenities to benefit underserved neighbourhood in our constituencies,’’ he unveiled.

“Many lawmakers have retired as paupers and have to live with the pain and hardships of contracting private loans during their time in office to construct infrastructures for their constituencies,’’ he lamented.

He asserted that checking the records from 1992 to date, MPs really suffer after they retire from office. “Anybody can do a survey and debunk this point I am making,’’ he added.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin furthered that he doesn’t understand why some Ghanaians believe that politicians and MPs are unscrupulous and amass wealth for themselves. He advised Ghanaians to change their mind about politicians.
