Martin Kpedu, a Ghanaian private legal practitioner has indicated that there is no need to eliminate the guarantor system in voter registration.

According to him, there is no need for the new Constitutional Instrument because the guarantor system in voter registration has been working effectively for so many decades now.

Speaking in an interview on the Key Points on TV3 on March 4, 2023, which was monitored by 1Family Radio, the attorney asserted that there is no need to fix something which is not broken therefore the EC should maintain the guarantor system.

Briefing parliament on the new CI proposal, the chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa disclosed that the CI will prevent the enrolment of minors on the register and it will also prevent foreigners from voting.

However, Mr. Kpebu believes that the by virtue of identifying minors and foreigners in the guarantor system and being able to eliminate them implies that the system is still working.

“since the guarantor system in voter registration is still working, there is no need to fix something which is not broken,” he concluded.
